Japanese Golden Week
May 2nd - 6th, 2009

Golden week started !

Showa no hi (April 29), this day ushers Japan into "Golden Week", a succession of holidays. Several national holidays, and, when Saturdays and Sundays are included, this week has more holidays than any other except for the New Year and summer vacations.


April 29 -Showa no hi-
(The birthday of Showa Emperor)

This was the birthday of the Showa Emperor Hirohito who died in 1989.

May 3 -Kenpo kinenbi-
(Constitution Day
)
This was established as a national holiday to commemorate the present Constitution of Japan that took effect on May 3, 1947.

May 4 -Midori no hi-
(Greenery Day
)
Showa Emperor Hirohito deep concern for the environment, the day has been renewed as a national holiday in the form of Midori-no-hi.

May 5 -Kodomo no hi-
(Children's Day
)
Originally it was called Boy's Festival and was for celebrating boys' growing up, but now it has become a day to celebrate children in general.

May 6 -Furikae holiday-
A substitute holiday.
